AceMoney Studio

Export and print your data

Last updated

Studio exports what you see on the Register, Reports, Accounts, Schedule and Portfolio pages as text files you can open in a spreadsheet or another finance program, and prints the same pages on desktop. From version 1.2, File ▸ Export Everything… also saves the whole document in one file. In AceMoney Studio Mobile (from version 1.2, not in the stores yet), an export on a phone or tablet goes out through the system share sheet.

Export a register

  1. Open Register and pick the account.
  2. Choose the Export menu in the toolbar and pick CSV, TXT, HTML or QIF.
  3. On desktop, choose where to save in the dialog; a message confirms Saved to the path. In AceMoney Studio Mobile (from version 1.2, not in the stores yet), on a phone the share sheet opens; pick Save to Files, a cloud drive or any app.

On a computer, the export covers the whole account, not the rows a search or filter is showing; rows hidden by Hide reconciled are left out. In AceMoney Studio Mobile (from version 1.2) on a phone or tablet, it holds only the rows the register lists: the last 90 days. The columns are Number, Date, Payee, Category, Status, Withdrawal, Deposit, Balance and Comment. The suggested file name is the account name. CSV and QIF use the layout Studio’s own import understands, so a register exported from one document can be imported into another. A QIF file writes a transfer with its account name and leaves out split-line detail.

Export a report

  1. Open Reports, pick the report, and set the period and switches.
  2. Choose CSV, HTML or TXT in the report’s title row.
  3. Save (desktop) or share (phone, in AceMoney Studio Mobile from version 1.2) as above.

CSV quotes every field, HTML is a simple table with the report title as heading, and TXT is tab-separated. The file is named after the report. See Reports and charts for the reports. A Subtotal row is written like any other row, with the word Subtotal in the first column (bold in HTML and on paper); there are no blank rows between groups.

Export the account list

  1. Open Accounts and choose the Export menu (tooltip Export accounts).
  2. Pick TXT, CSV, QIF, XML or JSON.
  3. For every format except QIF, Studio asks Include account numbers?. Choose Exclude (recommended) unless you need the numbers in the file; together with the bank name they can be enough to set up a debit.
  4. Save or share.

The file lists every account grouped by account group with a subtotal per group and a Grand Total, with the columns Account, Number, Status (Closed or blank), Balance and Currency.

Export the schedule or the portfolio

  1. Open Schedule or Portfolio.
  2. Choose the Export button (tooltip Export schedule or Export portfolio) and pick CSV, HTML or TXT.
  3. Save or share.

CSV is for a program to read, with plain numbers and dates; HTML and TXT are for a person to read, in your number and date format. The Portfolio page is part of the unlocked app; in the free version it shows Investments is part of AceMoney Studio instead.

Print

On macOS, Windows and Linux, Print opens your system’s print dialog with a paginated table. It is in the Register toolbar, in a report’s title row, and next to Export on the Accounts, Schedule and Portfolio pages (tooltips Print accounts, Print schedule, Print portfolio). The system print dialog can also save the pages as a PDF, which is how you get a PDF from Studio. The keyboard shortcut is Cmd+P on macOS and Ctrl+P on Windows and Linux; it prints whichever of those five pages is on screen.

The desktop File menu reaches the same controls: File ▸ Export… and File ▸ Print… each list Register…, Report…, Accounts…, Schedule… and Portfolio…, and open that page, where the buttons above do the work.

Export the mileage tax pack

With the Mileage plan, Mileage ▸ Reports ▸ Tax pack (CSV) exports the period’s business trips with their deductions. See Mileage.

Export the whole document

From version 1.2, on a computer, File ▸ Export Everything… saves all of this document’s data as one JSON file, with copies of its attachments, in a new folder. The format is documented and versioned, so any program can read it, and the export is yours to keep if you ever stop using Studio.

  1. Choose File ▸ Export Everything…. The Export everything dialog explains what is written and warns “The export is not encrypted: anyone who can open the folder can read your data.” For a document with a password it adds “This document is encrypted, but its export will not be.”
  2. Choose Choose folder…, then pick where the export goes (Choose where to save the export). Studio creates a new folder there whose name starts with AceMoney export.
  3. Exporting… runs, then a message says Export finished: with the number of rows and attachments and the folder. Choose Show folder to open it.

Keys, passwords, license and sync identifiers are never exported, and neither is anything in the Trash. If an attachment’s file is not on this computer, the message says so and the attachment is listed without its file. Export Everything is not a backup Studio can restore. To carry your finances to another computer as a working document, use File ▸ Save a Copy As… or copy the document file itself; see Documents and files. Backups are the app’s own complete copies on this device; see Backups and restore.

What Studio does not export

  • No PDF export other than saving a PDF from the system print dialog.
  • No OFX export. Before version 1.2, no export of the whole document either.
  • Nothing AceMoney Classic can open, except a QIF register exported per account. Moving data is one way: from AceMoney Classic into Studio, see Import data.

Platform notes

macOS

A save dialog for every export; Print and the shortcut on the five pages; the File ▸ Export…, File ▸ Export Everything… (from version 1.2) and File ▸ Print… menus.

Windows

Same as macOS.

Linux

Same as macOS. The Linux print dialog has no preview: it goes straight to a printer or to a PDF file.

iOS (iPhone and iPad)

From AceMoney Studio Mobile 1.2 (coming to iPhone and Android), every export opens the system share sheet instead of a save dialog; a message says Shared afterwards. Use Save to Files to keep the file. There is no File menu, so no Export Everything…. To print, share the file to an app that prints, or export on a desktop.

Android

Same as iOS; keep the file with a Drive, Files or mail app from the share sheet.

Common questions

Which format should I use for a spreadsheet?

CSV. Every field is quoted, so payees with commas open correctly. TXT is the same data with tabs.

Which format keeps the most for another finance program?

QIF for a register: it carries dates, payees, categories, amounts, statuses and transfers. Split-line detail is not written in any format: a split is one row whose Category reads Split in CSV, TXT and HTML, and QIF leaves its category line out.

Does the export follow my search or filter?

No. On a computer, a register export always contains the full account (minus rows hidden by Hide reconciled); in AceMoney Studio Mobile (from version 1.2) on a phone or tablet, it holds only the rows the register lists, the last 90 days. A report export contains the report as shown with its period and switches.

How do I make a PDF?

Choose Print on desktop and save as PDF from the print dialog (on macOS, Save as PDF). In AceMoney Studio Mobile (from version 1.2, not in the stores yet), on a phone, export as HTML and share it to an app that prints, or print from a desktop.

Can I export from my phone to my computer?

From AceMoney Studio Mobile 1.2 (not in the stores yet), yes. Export on the phone and choose a cloud drive or mail in the share sheet, then open the file on the computer.

Are account numbers in the export?

Only if you choose Include when asked. The default is Exclude (recommended). QIF never contains them.

Can I export everything at once?

From version 1.2, yes: File ▸ Export Everything… on a computer writes one JSON file with all your data and copies of your attachments. It is not encrypted, so keep it private. For a copy Studio can open again, use Save a Copy As… or the app’s backups; both are complete copies of the document.

Does Export Everything include my account numbers?

Yes. Unlike the account list export, it does not ask: account numbers and payee contact details are written in plain text. Keys, passwords, license and sync identifiers are left out.

Troubleshooting

“Couldn’t export. Choose another place and try again.” The file could not be written to the place you chose. Pick another folder, or, in AceMoney Studio Mobile (from version 1.2) on a phone, pick a different target in the share sheet.

“The export could not be written. Nothing was left behind.” Export Everything could not finish. Check the free space and that you can write to the folder you chose, then try again.

I cancelled the save dialog and nothing happened. That is expected: cancelling writes nothing and shows no message.

The share sheet closed and the file is nowhere. In AceMoney Studio Mobile (from version 1.2, not in the stores yet), dismissing the share sheet without picking a target discards the file. Export again and choose Save to Files or an app.

The register export is missing rows. Hide reconciled is on for that account, or the rows are in another account. Switch the switch off and export again.

Print shows nothing on my phone. Printing is a desktop feature. In AceMoney Studio Mobile (from version 1.2, not in the stores yet), export the page as HTML and print from the app you share it to.

The PDF is cut off at the page edge. The print dialog is set to a small paper size. Choose Letter or A4 and, if needed, landscape.
