How to install AceMoney on a Mac?

AceMoney is not a native Mac application, however you still can run it on a Mac with emulation or virtualization software, or simply in the native mode if you install Windows and Mac OS X side by side with the help of Boot Camp.

Native mode

You can install Windows and Mac side by side and switch between them using Boot Camp, but that requires a reboot every time, and you can only use one operating system at a time. This method requires you to have a Windows CD with a valid serial number.

Read more about Boot Camp and how to run Windows on a Mac at native speed on Apple website.

Virtualization software

There are several open source (free) and commercial packages which allow to run Windows on a Mac as a separate application. You will be able to install AceMoney into a virtual machine and use it from there. This solution is heavier than emulation, but allows you to install not only AceMoney, but pretty much any Windows software into the virtual machine. This solution also requires you to have a CD with Windows and valid serial number.

Here is a list of the most popular virtualization applications for a Mac:

Emulation software

Emulation software allows to run AceMoney on a Mac right in your Mac OS next to the other native Mac programs. Reboot is not required and a copy of Windows also is not needed. This is the most lightweight way to get AceMoney on a Mac, however it requires an Intel based Mac.

The actual Windows emulation software is called Wine. Wine is an open source software for running Windows applications on other operating systems. Think of Wine as a Windows compatibility layer. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely alternative implementation consisting of 100% Microsoft-free code.

Wine itself is a free product, but requires some manual installation steps described below. CrossOver is a polished commercial version of Wine provided by CodeWeavers.

Wine community spends a lot of time testing different software applications under Wine. If the application installs and works out of the box without any tweaks, it gets Platinum rating. AceMoney is one of the few applications which is rated Platinum in Wine Application Database.

Downloading Wine

Wine can be downloaded as a prebuilt binary package, Wine web site provides links.

Wine also can be obtained through MacPorts.org. This tutorial provides step by step instructions how to setup Wine on a Mac. The instructions are pretty clear. The installer will download and install wine on your system, it may take about 15-20 minutes on regular high speed connection, your experience may vary.

The next step is downloading the latest version of AceMoneySetup.exe on your Mac. Open Terminal, navigate to the folder with the setup file and type:

wine AceMoneySetup.exe

This command will launch our standard install, you'll see a dialog similar to this:

At this point everything will be exactly like on your Windows system, you'll see main AceMoney window, will be able to open your data file with File->Open, etc.
